Thank you to Kimberly Krey for joining us today on her book tour around the blogosphere! Today we have a guest post to share with you about writing drafts. This one is about alternate beginnings. Enjoy!

Hello you fabulous, bookish peeps! I’m thrilled to be visiting these ultra-cool blogs to share parts of Evie’s Knight with you all! In this post, I’ll be sharing alternate beginnings to Evie’s Knight.

So much emphasis is put on a book’s opening scene. It’s something writers often struggle with. After all, it’s what makes our reader want to keep on reading. Below are three different opening scenes that, for one reason or another, didn’t quite make the cut.

The first scene is old. So old that several things mentioned in this opening paragraph are no longer relevant to the novel. As it stands now, Evie does not have a job and her mother isn’t in the picture. Still, this was, at one point, the beginning to Evie’s Knight. A good ol’ fashion car rant:

Me in twenty seconds? How can I sum up me in twenty seconds? Evie Wylder tightened her fingers around the steering wheel, trying to come up with an answer to her own question. Lets see Ill turn eighteen next month, and well, my best friend just moved over twelve-hundred miles away. My parents might split. My love life is void because my ex-boyfriend turned out to be a stupid, cheating loser. And best of all, Im starting this lovely new career in telemarketing. Impressive.

This next draft is more recent and still takes place in the novel, just not in the first paragraph.

The gas tank was empty. Evie knew she had to fill up, but the sight of the black Jeep Wrangler made her hedge. Calvin Knight owned a jeep like that. She looked at the meter again – way too empty – probably running on fumes alone by now. Not much of a choice.

For the third, I thought Id share an alternate Prologue I considered using at one point.

Prologue
The sight of the dagger ripped a hollow gasp from Calvins throat. Blood, deep and crimson, oozed down the copper blade. He knew before even looking that it was Evies blood.
Breathless strides took him closer to the delicate girl, lying pale and lifeless on the altar. He glared at the raven-haired ghost hunched over her form. “You killed her.
With eyes as dark as the death in her wake, the demon scowled at Calvin and spat words so haunting they tore him from sleep. No, Calvin. You killed her.

Evie’s Knight

Paperback, 391 pages

Premise:

When Evie falls in love with Calvin Knight, their young, virtuous romance
conjures a truly wicked spell.

Evie always thought her eighteenth year would be magical, but so far it's not
what she hoped for. Her best friend has gone wild, her love life is void, and
she misses her mom more than ever. But life for Evie is about to change. Calvin
Knight, the object of her fascination, is about to fall madly in love with her.
Just one problem: Their love conjures a murderous woman from beyond the grave who
wants Evie dead. The same demon who has haunted the Knight men for over four
generations. Soon Calvin is forced to make a choice: Set Evie free and hope to
evade the wrath of The Raven- haired Ghost, or use his newly gifted strengths
to fight against her. If he chooses to fight and wins, Calvin will free the
Knight men of this demonic witch. If he loses, Evie will become her next
victim.
