Friday Teasers: Book Beginnings, Teaser Tuesdays, and The Friday 56

As the blog becomes busier I am attempting to streamline things a bit in order to to avoid *spamming* your lovely (and probably already full) feeds. I've been thinking of combining some of the memes that have themes in common. I'd like to start your weekend off with a little bit of fun. Friday will now belong to teasers, trailers, and my very neglected word searches (still neglected in this post).

This week's teaser book is

HELPER12 by Jack Blaine

Helper12 works as a Baby Helper in Pre Ward, the place where babies spend their first six months of life before they’re tracked for vocations and sent to training. She does her job well, and she stays out of trouble. But one day, the Sloanes, Society members who enjoy all the privileges of their station—family unit clearance, a private dwelling, access to good food and good schools—come to “adopt” one of the Pre Ward babies. The Director makes a deal and the Sloanes walk out with a brand new child.

They also walk out owning Helper12—the Director sells her to them, and there’s nothing she can do but go. At the Sloanes, Helper12 enters a world where people should be able to enjoy life—with high position and riches come the opportunity for individual freedom, even the chance to love—but that’s not what she finds. The Sloanes are keeping secrets. So is their biological son, Thomas.

Helper12 has some secrets of her own; she’s drawing, which is a violation, since Baby Helpers aren’t tracked for Art. And she’s growing to love the child she was bought to care for—at the same time that Ms. Sloane is becoming disenchanted with her impulse baby buy.

When all your choices are made for you, how do you make some for yourself? Helper12 is about to find out.

Book Beginnings

Book Beginnings on Friday is a weekly meme hosted by A Few More Pages where we answer the question, "So, what is the first line of your current read, and how did you like it?"

The first line is

I was originally tracked as a breeder.

This immediately brought up memories of The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I wonder if this book will be at all similar to that one. It definitely had me wanting more.

Teaser Tuesday:

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

 My teaser is...

..."How do you tell yourselves apart, all you Helpers?"
I say nothing at first, but I can't help myself, finally.
"How many boys named Thomas who can't hold their liquor do you suppose there are, wandering around?"

The Friday 56

is hosted by Freda's Voice
*Grab a book, any book.

*Turn to page 56.
*Find any sentence that grabs you.
*Post it.

It's that simple.
This is an ebook so my teaser is from location 56 (1%). At location 56 of HELPER12:

I can picture myself pushing toward the warmth, the voice of whomever it was who picked me up back then, my Helper.

Official Teaser:

You can read THE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS online thanks to Jack Blaine.

Thanks for checking out my teasers. If you'd like to learn more about this book you can go to the Goodreads page. This book is available through Amazon Kindle. Click on the buttons to be taken to their pages. Stay tuned for my upcoming review! I have to say, this is a book I'm having a hard time putting down...

  1. I get the idea this book is about sweet babies. Hope the Helper is a good person.

  2. This one does have similar themes as The Handmaid's Tale, but with unique differences, apparently a little more freedom. Not much, probably.

I'm rereading The Handmaid's Tale right now, so this one sounds like a good one to follow up with....

Nice beginning and excerpt on 56.

  3. This is a very interesting premise. I haven't read 'The Handmaid's Tale', but this reminds me a little of the film 'Never Let Me Go' starring Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley. It sounds like it has the potential to go either way - either become one of those boundary-pushing stories of its time which will change the way we all think (I'm thinking '1984'-esque) or it will end up being a damp squib. I'd be interested to see what you think of the rest of it!

  4. I like how you put all the teasers in one post. Good idea!
    Lovely 56! Thanks for participating!

  5. Now that you mention it, that beginning does remind me of The Handmaid's Tale!

Thanks for participating in Book Beginnings!

  6. It sort of reminds me of The Handmaid's Tale too. You gave us some very interesting teasers, I might have to look for this book.

  7. Sounds like an interesting read. I hope you enjoy it!
My Teaser is from HOLD ME CLOSER, NECROMANCER.
