On My Wishlist

Note: On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted by Book Chick City and runs every Saturday. It's where I list all the books I desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming. It's also an event that you can join in with too - Mr Linky is always at the ready for you to link your own 'On My Wishlist' post. If you want to know more click here.

On my wishlist this week is:

Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Summary:

Since his debut in 1951 as The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield has been synonymous with "cynical adolescent." Holden narrates the story of a couple of days in his sixteen-year-old life, just after he's been expelled from prep school, in a slang that sounds edgy even today and keeps this novel on banned book lists. It begins,

"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. In the first place, that stuff bores me, and in the second place, my parents would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them."

His constant wry observations about what he encounters, from teachers to phonies (the two of course are not mutually exclusive) capture the essence of the eternal teenage experience of alienation.

Can you believe I've never read this before? I feel like the only person in the world that hasn't! I guess it just never came up yet...

  3. Hi Erika. I have been following your blog for awhile.
I am wondering if you would like to email me your address. I have a copy of this book. I read it in high school for an English class. The book is an older copy, but it is in really good to excellent condition. Here is a link to the edition I have ( or at least the same cover..lol).
Anyway, if you would email me your address I will get it in the mail to you! Shouldn't take more than a few days to arrive as I am only about a 10 or 15 minute drive to Kitchener!
